Ido Muszkat Barkan ’22

Posted on October 17, 2023

Hello everyone, my name is Ido, Amitim ’22. This year, I am studying at the Natur gap year in the Golan Heights. It’s a gap year program in which we study various interesting topics related to Judaism, gender, philosophy, and more. We started the program a month ago, and I’m really enjoying the connections with my fellow students, the studies, and the stunning scenery of the Golan Heights.

Since the outbreak of the war, I have been volunteering with the Jerusalem Emergency Volunteer Organization (Chamal HaChirum HaYerushalmi), an organization established by civilian organizations that deals with various aspects of emergency assistance in the current situation in the country. I am part of the team that focuses on fundraising and procurement of humanitarian, medical, and logistical equipment for evacuees from the southern communities and soldiers on the front lines. Volunteering here gives strength and provides support during these uncertain and worrying times, but it also pains me to understand how extensive the need is and how little the state is doing for its citizens right now.

The civic engagement and solidarity expressed by people right now is very moving and gives me hope. Being here in Chamal and feeling the positivity and goodwill of people really strengthens me. I recommend to everyone to spend a lot of time with family and friends during these days, create a routine, and know that every emotional reaction to the current situation is legitimate and rational.

I pray for peace in the land for all its residents.

It's That Time of Year!
